چکیده

X-ray spectra from cores of galaxy clusters can be strongly distorted by resonant scattering of line photons, affecting metal abundance and gas velocity measurements. We introduce simulated spectral models that take into account the resonant scattering effect, radial variations of thermodynamic properties of the hot gas, projection effects and small-scale isotropic gas motions. The key feature of the models is that all these effects are treated self-consistently for the whole spectrum, rather than for individual lines. The model spectra are publicly available and can be used for direct comparison with observed projected spectra. Comparison with the existing XMM-Newton and Chandra data of the Perseus Cluster shows that even though there is no strong evidence for the resonant scattering in Perseus, the low energy resolution of the X-ray CCDs is not sufficient to robustly distinguish spectral distortions due to the resonant scattering, different metal abundance profiles and different levels of gas turbulence. Future AstroH data will resolve most of the problems we are facing with CCDs. With the help of our models, the resonant scattering analysis can be done self-consistently using the whole spectral information, constraining the level of gas turbulence already with a 100 ks observation with Astro-H.

Ni abundance in the core of the Perseus Cluster: an answer to the significance of resonant scattering

Using an XMM-Newton observation of the Perseus cluster we show that the excess in the flux of the 7-8 keV line complex previously detected by ASCA and BeppoSAX is due to an overabundance of Nickel rather than to an anomalously high Fe Heβ/Fe Heα ratio. This observational fact leads to the main result that resonant scattering, which was assumed to be responsible for the supposed anomalous Fe Heβ...

XMM-Newton Observations of the Perseus Cluster II: Evidence for Gas Motions in the Core

The 5-9 keV spectrum of the inner ∼100 kpc of the Perseus cluster measured by XMMNewton can be well described by an optically thin plasma emission model as predicted by the APEC code, without any need for invoking a strong Ni overabundance or the effects of resonant scattering. For the strongest 6.7 keV line of He-like iron, the optical depth of the cluster, calculated using observed density, t...

0 Central Elemental Abundance Ratios in the Perseus Cluster : Resonant Scattering or SN Ia Enrichment ?

We have determined elemental abundance ratios in the core of the Perseus cluster for several elements. These ratios indicate a central dominance of SN Ia ejecta similar to that found for A496, A2199 and A3571 (Dupke & White 2000a). Simultaneous analysis of ASCA spectra from SIS1, GIS 2&3 shows that the ratio of Ni to Fe abundances is ∼ 3.4 ± 1.1 times Solar within the central 4. This ratio is c...

Large Amplitude Vibration Analysis of Graphene Sheets as Resonant Mass Sensors Using Mixed Pseudo-Spectral and Integral Quadrature Methods

The present paper investigates the potential application of graphene sheets with attached nanoparticles as resonant sensors by introducing a nonlocal shear deformation plate model. To take into account an elastic connection between the nanoplate and the attached nanoparticle, the nanoparticle is considered as a mass-spring system. Then, a combination of pseudo-spectral and integral quadrature m...

We present preliminary results of the XMM-Newton 50 ksec observation of the Perseus cluster which provides an unprecedented view of the central 0.5 Mpc region. The projected gas temperature declines smoothly by a factor of 2 from a maximum value of ∼ 7 keV in the outer regions to just above 3 keV at the cluster center. Over this same range, the heavy element abundance rises slowly from 0.4 sola...
